Are you ready to help us tackle hunger in our community? Join us at our distribution center and play a key role in ensuring South Dakota families have the nourishment they need to reach their fullest potential. 

What You'll Do:

Your tasks may vary, but they’re all about putting food on the table! Shifts last up to 2 hours and may include:

BackPack Program
Help us pack nutritious food for kids in Sioux Falls! Work alongside fellow volunteers in an assembly line—some packing while others restock supplies. Together, we’ll make sure kids have the fuel they need to learn and grow.

Food Box Packing
Get involved in packing food boxes for our local seniors or for mobile distributions that support families. It’s a great way to connect with others while making a real impact in your community.

Bulk Food Processing
Join us in our bulk food room, where we take larger quantities and turn them into family-sized portions, including bulk produce. 

Food Sorting and Quality Assurance

As a volunteer, you’ll play a crucial role in sorting food donations or produce  to ensure they are safe for distribution. You’ll also help categorize items, making sure everything is ready for our school and wellness pantries.

Support and Training:

Please arrive at least 5 minutes early and dress in comfy layers with enclosed shoes. We’ll give you the scoop on your tasks and provide support throughout your shift.

Who Can Volunteer:

Must be able to stand and walk for 1-2 hours. Able to lift at least 5 pounds. All abilities are welcome! If you need accommodations, reach out to us at info@feedingsouthdakota.org. A waiver must be signed before volunteering. If you’re under 18, don’t forget to have a parent or guardian sign it. 

Age Requirements:

For safety, all volunteers must be 11 years or older, and those under 14 should bring a parent or guardian to help out.

Feeding South Dakota staff and volunteers work together to serve approximately 12,000 families each month through Mobile Food Distributions across the state.

We are seeking a volunteer to assist with guest registration, which includes checking in guests and entering or updating information on a tablet.

 

Key Responsibilities

Check in guests at the distribution using a tablet Enter or update guest information as needed Be respectful, welcoming, and supportive of guests, volunteers, and staff Review the Volunteer Guide for Registering Guests at a Mobile Distribution prior to your shift

 

Support & Training

Opportunity
We are seeking a detail-oriented volunteer to assist with a variety of data entry tasks, which may include scanning and processing waivers, entering information from paper documents into a computer, and updating volunteer and opportunity information. This role supports our behind-the-scenes operations and helps keep our information accurate.

This project will take place in our bulk-food room, where you’ll scoop seeds, seal, and label bags that will go into backpacks for children across South Dakota.

What to Expect:

Arrive at least 5 minutes early to get the scoop on how things work. Wear comfy layers and fully-enclosed shoes. No crocs, slides, sandals, keens. We’ll provide instructions, music, and staff support throughout the shift. Volunteers are required to keep the space as sanitary as possible; hairnets, aprons, and face masks will be provided to keep everything safe and clean.

Join us in our Sort Room and Warehouse where you'll play a crucial role in picking and packing food for pantries across Sioux Falls. Each week, our School Pantries and Sanford Children's Wellness Pantries rely on your help to restock their shelves and support local children and families in need.

Why Volunteer With Us?

What You'll Do:

Work around forklifts and, if comfortable, use a pallet jack.Stand, bend, and lift for up to 4 hours, with occasional lifts of up to 30lbs Follow instructions and contribute effectively on your own.

We'll provide all necessary instructions and training on site.Age Requirement: This role involves working independently in a warehouse setting with forklift traffic and is open to those 18 and older.

The front desk volunteer will be responsible for greeting guests and answering phone calls.

A Volunteer Guide will be provided! Our Volunteer Coordinator will be in the office next to yours, if you have questions or need assistance.Please arrive at least 10 minutes early for a brief training, and dress in comfy layers.

Feeding South Dakota receives thousands of pounds of donated food per year from various food drives and our retail salvage program, so we need your help to sort it so that we can stock our school and wellness pantries.

Key Responsibilities:

Volunteers will check expiration dates and labels on donated food, and then sort the donated food into categories such as Protein, Rice & Pasta, Cereal, for later distribution to school and wellness pantries.

Support/Training:

Please arrive at least 5 minutes early and wear comfortable clothing in layers and closed-toe/closed-heel shoes. Volunteers will be given instructions and training upon arrival and will have staff support throughout their shift. 

Qualifications:

Ability to stand and walk intermittently for 1-2 hours at a time.  Ability to bend at the hips in order to reach product from boxes.  Ability to read fine print.  Have attention to detail.

Mobile Distributions

Feeding South Dakota serves ALL 66 counties in the state and over 12,000 families per month.

HOW?

Because our Mobile Food Distribution Program allows Feeding South Dakota to go where hunger is, instead of hunger having to find us.

Each stop will provide you a chance to get some fresh air, meet other volunteers and guests, and help rural communities in need. This is a great opportunity for all who are curious about food insecurity and how it impacts rural communities.

Key Responsibilities:

Volunteers will ride in a Feeding South Dakota vehicle with one of our fun and kind-hearted Drivers to assist with guest registration and handing out food.

Support/Training:

At Feeding South Dakota, our volunteers and staff come together to distribute boxes and bags of food to our neighbors during Mobile Distributions. This essential program helps us support around 12,000 families across the state each month. We are seeking a volunteer to help with the guest registration process, which includes entering or updating guest information on a tablet and checking in guests for the distribution.

Support and Training:

Volunteers will receive instructions and training on guest registration before their shift, with ongoing staff support and supervision available throughout.

What to Wear:

Since distributions are held outdoors, please dress appropriately for all types of weather conditions. Wear comfortable, layered clothing and fully enclosed shoes—no crocs, sandals, or open-toed footwear. If you arrive in inappropriate shoes, we will kindly ask you to change before volunteering.

Qualifications:

Friendly Disposition: Ability to show respect and kindness to volunteers and guests from all backgrounds. Physical Ability: Comfortable standing and walking for 1-2 hours at a time. Technology Skills: Must be comfortable using a tablet.

Key Responsibilities:

Volunteers will assist with a variety of tasks to help with the distribution of food boxes to the public. Volunteer duties may include:

Assist Feeding South Dakota staff by directing traffic Registering guests receiving food using tablets (pen and paper will be used when necessary) Greeting the public Unloading pallets of food into vehicles and ensuring a friendly farewell

Support/Training:

Volunteers will be given instructions and training upon arrival and will have staff support and supervision throughout their shift. 

What to wear:

Distributions are held outside, please dress accordingly for all types of weather. Wear comfortable clothing in layers. Closed-toe/closed-heel shoes are required, 100% of the foot must be covered. No crocks, sandals, Keen sandals, etc. If you arrive not wearing appropriate footwear, we will kindly ask that you leave and change shoes or volunteer with us another time.

Qualifications:

Must have a friendly disposition and can SMILE! Ability to stand and walk for 2-3 hours at a time Ability to lift about 10 to 30 pounds

Age Requirements:

This position may be working outdoors in a parking lot around vehicle traffic. For safety reasons, all volunteers must be 11 years or older. Volunteers under 14 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
