Mobile Distributions

Feeding South Dakota serves ALL 66 counties in the state and over 12,000 families per month.

HOW?

Because our Mobile Food Distribution Program allows Feeding South Dakota to go where hunger is, instead of hunger having to find us.

Every successful distribution includes staff and volunteers to ensure our guests are welcomed and provided with food in an efficient and friendly manner.

Each stop will provide you a chance to get some fresh air, meet other volunteers and guests, and help rural communities in need. This is a great opportunity for all who are curious about food insecurity and how it impacts rural communities.

Please pack a lunch, snack, and drink for the road!

Key Responsibilities:

Volunteers will ride in a Feeding South Dakota vehicle with one of our fun and kind-hearted Drivers to assist with guest registration and handing out food.

Support/Training:

Please arrive at least 5 minutes early and wear comfortable clothing in layers and fully-enclosed shoes. Volunteers will be given instructions and training upon arrival and will have staff support and supervision throughout their shift. 

Qualifications:

Ability or willingness to learn to use a webpage on an iPad to register guests.Ability to show respect and kindness to volunteers and guests from all backgrounds. Ability to sit, stand, and walk intermittently for up to 6 hours. Ability to lift 10-20 lbs.

Age Requirements:

This position will be working outside in all weather conditions. For safety reasons, all volunteers must be 18 years or older.

Join us in our Sort Room and Warehouse where you'll play a crucial role in picking and packing food for pantries across Sioux Falls. Each week, our School Pantries and Sanford Children's Wellness Pantries rely on your help to restock their shelves and support local children and families in need.

Why Volunteer With Us?

Help provide essential food supplies to kids and families in Sioux Falls.Come solo or bring a friend; teamwork is encouraged!You'll be sorting, boxing, and recording food items, all while adhering to our guidelines.

What You'll Do:

Work around forklifts and, if comfortable, use a pallet jack.Stand, bend, and lift for up to 4 hours, with occasional lifts of up to 30lbs Follow instructions and contribute effectively on your own.

We'll provide all necessary instructions and training on site.Age Requirement: This role involves working independently in a warehouse setting with forklift traffic and is open to those 18 and older.

Make a Difference: Join Our Food Bank Family

Are you ready to help us tackle hunger in our community? Join us at our distribution center and play a key role in ensuring South Dakota families have the nourishment they need to reach their fullest potential. 

What You'll Do:

Your tasks may vary, but they’re all about putting food on the table! Shifts last up to 2 hours and may include:

BackPack Program
Help us pack nutritious food for kids in Sioux Falls! Work alongside fellow volunteers in an assembly line—some packing while others restock supplies. Together, we’ll make sure kids have the fuel they need to learn and grow.

Food Box Packing
Get involved in packing food boxes for our local seniors or for mobile distributions that support families. It’s a great way to connect with others while making a real impact in your community.

Bulk Food Processing
Join us in our bulk food room, where we take larger quantities and turn them into family-sized portions, including bulk produce. 

Food Sorting and Quality Assurance

As a volunteer, you’ll play a crucial role in sorting food donations or produce  to ensure they are safe for distribution. You’ll also help categorize items, making sure everything is ready for our school and wellness pantries.

Support and Training:

Please arrive at least 5 minutes early and dress in comfy layers with enclosed shoes. We’ll give you the scoop on your tasks and provide support throughout your shift.

Who Can Volunteer:

Volunteers help ensure we have enough food sorted and packed for families in need. The following are examples of projects that you might be helping with depending on the needs of the organization on any given day.

This food will be distributed at our mobile distribution locations throughout central South Dakota to help feed children, families, and seniors who need food assistance. Backpack Program Delivery – Sioux Falls

Join us each week as we bring joy and nourishment to children in need through our Backpack Program! With the help of dedicated volunteers and staff, we prepare nearly 3,000 backpacks per week filled with food to support kids over the weekend. We’re looking for helpers to join us in delivering these essential packs to schools across the Sioux Falls and surrounding area.

What You'll Do:

Accompany a Feeding South Dakota staff member on a delivery route.Help load and unload totes of food in and out of the vehicle. Each full tote weighs about 30 pounds, so you’ll need to be comfortable lifting and moving heavy items.

What to Expect:

Please arrive 10 minutes early dressed in comfortable, layered clothing and FULLY-ENCLOSED SHOES.Training and instructions will be provided on-site, and staff will be there to support you throughout your shift.

What We’re Looking For:

Ability to stand and walk for 3-4 hours.Ability to lift up to 30 pounds periodically.Must be 18 years or older due to outdoor work in varying weather conditions.

Distribution center volunteers help ensure we have enough food for families in need. The following are examples of projects that you might be helping with depending on the needs of the organization on any given day: 

BackPack Program - Volunteers will pack sacks of food for children in the Black Hills. The BackPack Program supports many children in the Black Hills area, and we need your help to ensure no child goes hungry in our community. This work is done in assembly-line fashion with some volunteers on the assembly line packing the food and others helping to restock the line with the product. Food Box Packing - Help your neighbors in need by packing food boxes at Feeding South Dakota's Rapid City distribution center. These boxes of food will be distributed at our mobile distribution locations to help feed children and families who need food assistance. This work is done in assembly-line fashion with some volunteers on the assembly line packing the food and others helping to restock the line with the product. Food Sorting - Volunteers may sort and repack donated food (both perishable and non-perishable) from food drives, our retail store partners, or our Feeding America network partners.

This essential program helps us support around 12,000 families across the state each month. We are seeking a volunteer to help with the guest registration process, which includes entering or updating guest information on a tablet and checking in guests for the distribution.

Key Responsibilities:

Check in guests visiting our food distribution on a tablet. Foster a respectful and welcoming atmosphere for guests receiving food. Work closely with fellow volunteers and staff to ensure smooth operations.

Support and Training:

Volunteers will receive instructions and training on guest registration before their shift, with ongoing staff support and supervision available throughout.

What to Wear:

Since distributions are held outdoors, please dress appropriately for all types of weather conditions. Wear comfortable, layered clothing and fully enclosed shoes—no crocs, sandals, or open-toed footwear. If you arrive in inappropriate shoes, we will kindly ask you to change before volunteering.

Qualifications:

Friendly Disposition: Ability to show respect and kindness to volunteers and guests from all backgrounds. Physical Ability: Comfortable standing and walking for 1-2 hours at a time. Technology Skills: Must be comfortable using a tablet.

Feeding South Dakota receives thousands of pounds of donated food per year from various food drives and our retail salvage program, so we need your help to sort it!

Key Responsibilities:

Volunteers will check expiration dates and labels on donated food, and then sort the donated food into categories such as Protein, Rice & Pasta, Cereal, for later distribution.

Support/Training:

Please arrive 5-10 minutes early and wear comfortable clothing in layers and closed-toe/closed-heel shoes. Volunteers will be given instructions and training upon arrival and will have staff support throughout their shift. 

Qualifications:

Ability to stand and walk intermittently for 2-3 hours at a time.  Ability to bend at the hips in order to reach product from boxes.  Ability to read fine print.  Have attention to detail.

At Feeding South Dakota, our volunteers and staff come together to distribute boxes and bags of food to our neighbors during Mobile Distributions. This essential program helps us support around 12,000 families across the state each month. We are seeking a volunteer to help with the guest registration process, which includes entering or updating guest information on a tablet and checking in guests for the distribution.

Key Responsibilities:

Check in guests visiting our food distribution on a tablet. Foster a respectful and welcoming atmosphere for guests receiving food. Work closely with fellow volunteers and staff to ensure smooth operations.

Support and Training:

Volunteers will receive instructions and training on guest registration before their shift, with ongoing staff support and supervision available throughout.

Mobile Distribution

Key Responsibilities:

Volunteers will assist with a variety of tasks to help with the distribution of food boxes to the public.

Volunteer duties may include:

Assist Feeding South Dakota staff by directing traffic Registering guests receiving food using pen and paper or tablet computers Greeting the public Unloading pallets of food into vehicles and ensuring a friendly farewell

Support/Training:

Please arrive wearing comfortable clothing in layers and closed-toe/closed-heel shoes. Volunteers will be given instructions and training upon arrival and will have staff support and supervision throughout their shift.

Qualifications:

Ability to stand and walk for 2-3 hours at a time Ability to lift about 10 to 30 pounds Work will be outdoors in winter weather. Please dress accordingly.

Age Requirements:

This position may be working outdoors in a parking lot around vehicle traffic. For safety reasons, all volunteers must be 11 years or older. Volunteers under 14 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

Who doesn't love cereal? Join us as we package cereal into family-sized portions for neighbors across South Dakota!

Cereal is perfect for families because it’s packed with vitamins and minerals, is quick to prepare, and keeps well in storage.

This project will be done in our bulk-food room, where you'll scoop cereal and seal and label bags that will go into food boxes for local families across the state.

What to Expect:

Arrive at least 5 minutes early to get the scoop on how things work.Wear comfy layers and fully-enclosed shoes.We'll provide instructions, music, and staff support throughout the shift.Volunteers are required to keep the space as sanitary as possible, and will be provided a hairnet, apron, and face mask to keep everything safe and clean.

Allergen: Gluten 

Volunteers are needed to assist our operations staff in the warehouse with picking community partner orders from our food inventory.
