Volunteer: Rapid City: Food Sorting and Packing (2025) - AM Shifts

Distribution center volunteers help ensure we have enough food for families in need. The following are examples of projects that you might be helping with depending on the needs of the organization on any given day: 

BackPack Program - Volunteers will pack sacks of food for children in the Black Hills. The BackPack Program supports many children in the Black Hills area, and we need your help to ensure no child goes hungry in our community. This work is done in assembly-line fashion with some volunteers on the assembly line packing the food and others helping to restock the line with the product. Food Box Packing - Help your neighbors in need by packing food boxes at Feeding South Dakota's Rapid City distribution center. These boxes of food will be distributed at our mobile distribution locations to help feed children and families who need food assistance. This work is done in assembly-line fashion with some volunteers on the assembly line packing the food and others helping to restock the line with the product. Food Sorting - Volunteers may sort and repack donated food (both perishable and non-perishable) from food drives, our retail store partners, or our Feeding America network partners.

Support/Training:

Please arrive 10 minutes early and wear comfortable clothing in layers and closed-toe/closed-heel shoes. Volunteers will be given instructions and training upon arrival and will have staff support and supervision throughout their shift. 

Qualifications:

Ability to stand and walk for 2-3 hours at a time. Ability to lift 10 to 30 pounds. Volunteers of all abilities are welcome. Key Responsibilities:

Volunteers will check expiration dates and labels on donated food, and then sort the donated food into categories such as Protein, Rice & Pasta, Cereal, for later distribution.

What to wear:

Distributions are held outside, please dress accordingly for all types of weather. Wear comfortable clothing in layers. Fully enclosed shoes are required, 100% of the foot must be covered. No crocks, sandals, Keen sandals, etc. If you arrive not wearing appropriate footwear, we will kindly ask that you leave and change shoes or volunteer with us another time.

Must have a friendly disposition and can SMILE! Ability to stand and walk for 2-3 hours at a time.Must be comfortable with tablet usage. Must have completed the mobile check in training prior to signing up for the opportunity.

Help your neighbors in need today by volunteering to help check guests into our mobile food distributions.

Key Responsibilities:

Accurately record Guest attendance on the supplied iPad.  Indicate the number of households being picked up by Guest by marking their vehicle with a washable marker or paper “tag."Provide a space for guests not to feel judged while receiving food.

Support/Training:

Volunteers will be given instructions and training at a training session prior to the shift and will have staff support and supervision throughout their shift. 

What to wear:

Distributions are held outside, please dress accordingly for all types of weather. Wear comfortable clothing in layers. Fully enclosed shoes are required, 100% of the foot must be covered. No crocks, sandals, Keen sandals, etc. If you arrive not wearing appropriate footwear, we will kindly ask that you leave and change shoes or volunteer with us another time.

Qualifications:

Must have a friendly disposition and can SMILE! Ability to stand and walk for 2-3 hours at a time.Must be comfortable with tablet usage. Must have completed the mobile check in training prior to signing up for the opportunity.

Distribution center volunteers help ensure we have enough food for families in need. The following are examples of projects that you might be helping with depending on the needs of the organization on any given day: 

BackPack Program - Volunteers will pack sacks of food for children in the Black Hills. The BackPack Program supports many children in the Black Hills area, and we need your help to ensure no child goes hungry in our community. This work is done in assembly-line fashion with some volunteers on the assembly line packing the food and others helping to restock the line with the product. Food Box Packing - Help your neighbors in need by packing food boxes at Feeding South Dakota's Rapid City distribution center. These boxes of food will be distributed at our mobile distribution locations to help feed children and families who need food assistance. This work is done in assembly-line fashion with some volunteers on the assembly line packing the food and others helping to restock the line with the product. Food Sorting - Volunteers may sort and repack donated food (both perishable and non-perishable) from food drives, our retail store partners, or our Feeding America network partners.

Support/Training:
