Every hour you give at our distribution center helps ensure families across South Dakota have enough food on the table. This is where the work happens — and we are glad you are here to be a part of it.
What You Might Be Doing
Depending on what is needed on any given day, you may be working on one or more of the following:
BackPack Program
Help pack sacks of food for thousands of children in the Rapid City area. This is assembly-line work with volunteers packing food or keeping the line stocked.
Food Box Packing
Pack food boxes that head out to our mobile distribution sites to feed children and families who need it most. Also done in assembly-line fashion.
Food Sorting & Quality Assurance
Sort and repack donated food — both perishable and non-perishable — from food drives, retail store partners, or our Feeding America network partners.
What to Expect
When You Arrive
Please plan to arrive at least 10 minutes before your shift. Our staff will walk you through everything you need to know and will be with you throughout your shift. No experience is necessary — just a willingness to help.
What to Wear
Dress in comfortable layers — our warehouse is kept cool for food safety. Fully enclosed, closed-heel shoes are required. Sandals, Crocs, Keens, and flip-flops are not permitted. Leave valuables locked in your vehicle.
Physical Requirements
Volunteers should be able to stand and walk for 2–3 hours and lift 10–30 pounds. Volunteers of all abilities are welcome — if you need a reasonable accommodation please contact us at volunteer@feedingsouthdakota.org.
Age Requirements
Volunteers must be at least 11 years old. Anyone under 14 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Everyone needs a signed waiver on file before their shift — for volunteers under 18 a parent or guardian signature is required.
Volunteering with a Group
Volunteering is even better with company! We welcome groups of all sizes — friends, family, coworkers, and organizations. If you are bringing a group, please use the “Respond as a Team” feature when signing up for your opportunity below.
